I previously mentioned the CASE Advancement Summit in Chicago, July 8 through 10, 2007. I will be participating in two sessions there. First I will be a panelist discussing trends in online engagement with alumni, and then will give a solo talk about the field of "identity management."
If you are attending the conference, please look for me and say hello. Meanwhile, here is a shortened summary for each of these two sessions:
Monday, July 9
11:00am to 12:15pm
Advocacy, Online Communities and Future Directions in Alumni Engagement
Younger alumni have developed distinct communication and interaction habits which are mirrored in self-directed initiatives and the ascent of online communities such as MySpace, LinkedIn, or Second Life. These global communities offer opportunities for new alumni advocacy and giving models. Learn how today’s alumni organize themselves outside traditional engagement patterns.
Speakers:
- Daniel J. Guhr, Managing Director, Illuminate Consulting Group
- Andy Shaindlin, Executive Director, Caltech Alumni Association
- Lou Alexander, Director, Alumni Education, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Monday, July 9

Managing Alumni Identities: An Intro for the Busy Professional
In these days of security and privacy concerns, e-mail for life, online transactions, and the occasional data breach, it’s critical for alumni professionals to learn about the emerging field of identity management (IdM). IdM lets us verify that alumni online are who they say they are and give them privileges and services based on this information. It’s also the key to increasing the usefulness of our alumni databases. Get a brief overview of IdM, learn why alumni professionals need to know about it, and find out what to do with this information once you get back to campus.
Speaker:
- Andy Shaindlin, Executive Director, Caltech Alumni Association
Before the conference I will post something here to introduce the topic of "identity management" in alumni relations. Meanwhile, here's the link to the Conference web site.
